Wells next the Sea
The town of Wells is now a mile from the North Sea, as a result of the silting of the harbour, but still thrives as a seaside resort with a popular beach that can be reached by a narrow gauge railway. The main shopping street leads inland from the quay, although most of the 40-plus pubs that used to exist in the town have now gone.
The distinctive landmark of the seafront is the granary with its overhanging gantry on the quay, finished in 1904, and now converted to flats. Eating fish and chips on the quay, as well as fishing for crabs (and putting them back!) are both very popular pastimes in Wells.
